Help with getting started, and with the moments that need a little care.

Getting started

  1. Open VaultWell and tap Get started.
  2. Trace a path of at least eight cells on the comb, then trace it again to confirm.
  3. Name your vault, then set a recovery phrase and write it on paper.
  4. Add your first items with the + button: Photos, Camera, Files or Note.
  5. Export an encrypted backup and keep it somewhere off the phone.

Troubleshooting

I forgot my path

On the lock screen, long-press the centre cell of the comb and choose Recover with phrase. Enter the vault's recovery phrase, then set a new path. Without the phrase, the vault can't be opened by anyone, including us.

I'm moving to a new phone

Before you switch, export a backup of every vault (vault settings, then Backup & sharing, then Export backup) and save the files somewhere you can reach from the new phone. Vaults don't move with phone transfer tools, because their keys are tied to the old phone's hardware.

Restoring a backup

Install VaultWell on the new phone, long-press the centre cell on the lock screen, choose Restore backup, pick the .vwbackup file and trace that vault's path. If you've forgotten the path, choose the option to use the recovery phrase instead.

A share won't open

  • Check the share phrase word by word. Capital letters and extra spaces don't matter.
  • The share may have expired or run out of opens. When that happens, the copy stops opening. Ask the sender for a new one.
  • Make sure the file arrived whole. Some messaging apps compress or rename attachments; try sending it another way.

I saw a notice when changing the icon

On iPhone, the system always shows a short notice when an app changes its icon. It's expected and can't be turned off by apps. On Android, some launchers take a moment to show the new icon and name.

Lots of wrong paths

If intruder snapshots are on, a photo is taken after a set number of wrong paths. It appears in the next vault you open, so you'll know if someone else tried.
