Questions and answers

Short answers to the questions people ask most. If yours isn't here, the support page may help.

The basics

What is VaultWell?

An app for iPhone and Android that keeps photos, videos and notes encrypted on your phone. You open each vault by drawing its own path on a honeycomb.

Do I need an account?

No. No email, no phone number, nothing to sign up for.

When is it available?

VaultWell is coming soon to iPhone and Android. It isn't in the app stores yet.

What can I keep in a vault?

Photos, videos, files and notes. Add them from Photos, Camera or Files, or write a note in the app.

Which languages does it speak?

33 languages. It follows your phone's language unless you pick one.

Paths and recovery

What is a path?

Instead of a PIN, you trace a route across a honeycomb of 37 cells. It needs at least eight cells, and the order matters. A meter shows how strong it is as you trace.

What if I forget my path?

Your recovery phrase of six or more words brings everything back. We can't recover it for you, because we never have it.

Can I change a vault's path?

Yes, from the vault's settings. Your recovery phrase keeps working.

What if I lose both the path and the phrase?

Then nobody can open that vault, including us. That's the cost of having no back door.

Hidden vaults and duress

How many vaults can I have?

As many as you need. Each opens with its own path, and nothing on screen shows how many exist.

What is the duress vault?

A vault you can open if someone forces you to unlock. Opening it with its path permanently erases every other vault on the phone, with no warning on screen.

Can I undo a duress erase?

Not on the phone. Only encrypted backups you stored elsewhere can bring those vaults back.

Can anyone tell how many vaults I have?

Not from the screen. Someone with deep access to the app's files could count encrypted vault folders. The security page explains this.

Backups, phones and sharing

Does VaultWell sync to the cloud?

Not today. Your vaults stay on your phone, and encrypted backups go wherever you choose to keep them.

How do I move to a new phone?

Export an encrypted backup of each vault, save it somewhere off the phone, then restore it on the new phone by tracing the vault's path. iPhone to Android and back both work.

How does sharing work?

You send a read-only .vwshare copy with a limit on opens and an expiry date. The person also needs the share phrase, which you send separately.

Can I take back a share?

Not once it's sent. Use a short expiry and a small number of opens when that matters.

Privacy and security

Can VaultWell see my files?

No. Everything is encrypted on your phone with a key made from your path, and nothing is sent to us.

Has VaultWell been audited?

Not yet. An independent audit is planned before launch, and we'll publish the outcome.

Does it block screenshots?

VaultWell protects against screen capture and hides content in the app switcher. On iPhone the system still allows screenshots; VaultWell tells you when one is taken.

What are intruder snapshots?

If you turn them on, VaultWell silently takes a front-camera photo after a set number of wrong paths. It appears in the next vault you open.

How much does it cost?

Pricing hasn't been announced yet.
