Compress a photo

Make a photo smaller by quality or to a target file size, as JPEG or WebP. It all happens in your browser.

How it works

Your browser decodes the photo and encodes it again as JPEG or WebP at the quality you choose. With Target size, the tool tries a quality, checks the file size, and narrows in over nine rounds (a binary search) until it finds the highest quality that fits. If even the lowest quality is too big, shrink the longest edge and it will try again.

JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.

Why it stays private

Nothing leaves your device. There is no upload and no storage. The new file is encoded from a canvas, so EXIF data such as GPS location and camera model is left out.

Questions

What quality should I use?

Around 70 to 80 is usually hard to tell apart from the original for photos. Below 50, blocky edges start to show.

Why can't I pick WebP?

Some browsers, including Safari, can show WebP but can't create it from a canvas. The tool checks and only offers what works.

Why is my result bigger than the original?

The original may already be well compressed, or it may be a small PNG with flat colours. Lower the quality or the size.

Is there a file size limit?

Only your device's memory. Very large photos can be slow on older phones.
