Passphrase generator
Make a random passphrase of 6 to 16 easy words using your browser's secure random numbers. Nothing leaves your device.
Your passphrase
Runs on your deviceBest kept on paper. Write the words down by hand, in order, and store the paper somewhere safe. There is no copy button on purpose: clipboards are often synced or read by other apps.
How it works
Each word is picked from a list of a little over 2,500 short, common English words, written for this site. The page shows the exact list size after removing duplicates. Picks use crypto.getRandomValues, your browser's secure random source, with rejection sampling so every word is equally likely.
Strength comes from the count: each word adds log₂ of the list size, about 11.3 bits. Eight words give roughly 90 bits, which is far beyond guessing for a phrase that is truly random. A phrase you choose yourself is weaker than it looks, because people pick related words.
Why it stays private
The list ships inside the page and the phrase is made on your device. Nothing is sent, saved, or logged. Refresh the page and the phrase is gone.
Questions
Is this the same list VaultWell uses?
Not necessarily. The app makes its own recovery phrase of 6 or more words, or lets you write a custom one, and its list and length may differ from this page.
How many words should I use?
For a phrase that protects something important, 8 or more random words is a sensible start. More words is always stronger; it just takes longer to write down.
Why no copy or download?
Copied text can linger in clipboard history or sync to other devices. Paper kept somewhere safe is simple and stays off every network.
Can I swap a word I don't like?
Swapping one word for one you chose lowers the randomness a little. Pressing New phrase for a fresh set is better.
