Carrying medical records to appointments

How to keep test results, letters, and prescription photos on your phone for appointments while keeping them private.

October 2026

You are in the waiting room and the receptionist asks for your last test result. You know it is somewhere in your camera roll, between a birthday cake and a parking ticket. You scroll, with the person next to you glancing over. There is a calmer way to do this.

Right now

If you need to find a document quickly, search your photos for a word on it, such as "results" or the clinic's name. Both iPhone and Android photo apps can search text inside images on recent versions. Open it, show the screen, and keep hold of your phone.

Before the next appointment

  1. Gather what you usually need: prescriptions, the latest results, referral letters, your insurance card.
  2. Put them in one place. That could be a locked note, an album you keep out of the main view, or your phone's health app if it holds records from your provider.
  3. Check whether the original photos still sit in your camera roll and in Recently Deleted.
  4. Many clinics run patient portals. If yours does, it may be the better place to view records than a photo of a printout.

Keeping it private

Medical photos can show up in places you do not expect: cloud memories, widgets, shared albums, or a family member's device if you share a library. A quick look through your sharing settings is worth it.

If you want a separate lock that is not your phone passcode, a vault app can help. VaultWell, coming soon, keeps photos, files and notes encrypted behind their own traced path, and you can open a single item in the viewer to show it. It is one option among several.

Later

Every few months, clear out records you no longer need. A smaller set is easier to find in a hurry and less to worry about if the phone is lost.
